SAFETY · FIRST STEPS

What to do while you wait.

The first few minutes after a window or door glass break are critical for safety. Follow these steps while you wait for our team to arrive.
STEP · 01
Clear the area

Keep children, pets, and anyone without proper footwear away from the broken glass. Shards can scatter several feet from the break point.

STEP · 02
Don’t touch attached glass

Glass still attached to the frame can fall without warning and cause deep cuts. Leave loose pieces alone until our technician arrives.

STEP · 03
Wear shoes and gloves

If you must walk near the area, wear closed-toe shoes and work gloves. Thin slippers or bare feet are a serious hazard.

STEP · 04
Cover the opening

Use a heavy tarp, thick cardboard, or plastic sheeting secured with tape to block wind, rain, and debris until we arrive.

STEP · 05
Photograph the damage

Take photos of the damage from both inside and outside. These help our technician prepare the right glass size and type before arriving.

STEP · 06
Call OhMyGlass Window and Door Repairs

Call 647-803-2730. Our emergency line is staffed 24/7 including nights, weekends, and holidays.

SERVICE · OVERVIEW

Overview

Brampton's windows tell you when your neighbourhood was built. The city has grown in distinct waves: Bramalea from the late 1950s through the 1960s, the Springdale new town from 1991, and a surge of subdivisions since that has pushed north to Mayfield Road. By 2021 Brampton had 656,480 people, up 10.6% in five years, the fastest growth of Canada's 25 largest municipalities.

For glass, that means three different problem sets: older or already-replaced windows in Bramalea, fogged original sealed units in 1990s and 2000s houses, and heavy winter condensation in busy homes across the city. In most of these cases the fix is new glass in the existing frame. OhMyGlass Window and Door Repairs replaces the sealed unit or pane, keeps the frame, and fixes the rollers or crank on the same visit if they need it. If a frame has failed, we will tell you it is a window-replacement job rather than a glass repair.

Brampton is still a city of houses. Of roughly 182,000 occupied dwellings in 2021, about 96,000 were single-detached, 24,700 semi-detached and 23,100 row houses, with 18,600 in buildings of five or more storeys, so only about one dwelling in ten is in a tower. Bramalea was Canada's first satellite community, built as a new town separate from the old Town of Brampton, with each phase taking the next letter of the alphabet from the A section through to the M, N and P sections south of Bovaird Drive. The G and H sections pioneered zero-lot-line houses built on or within inches of the property line, where a window close to the neighbour's wall can make access the main cost factor.

Brampton households are also large. In 2021, 25.91% of residents lived in households of five or more people and 23.55% in four-person households, and NRCan estimates a family of four produces about 50 litres of water a week. Add 4,100 heating degree-days against 3,520 at Toronto City Hall, about 16% more heating demand, and winter condensation on the room side is a common complaint here that has nothing to do with a failed seal.

What tends to fail, by part of Brampton

Typical sealed-unit life is 10 to 25 years, and units facing south often last less than 12.

01
Bramalea, the A to P sections, from the late 1950s

replacement windows of varying age. Fogged later-generation units, worn hardware, and tight access on the zero-lot-line streets.

02
Springdale and the later northern subdivisions, 1991 onward

original double-pane units and sliding patio doors. Fogged units, patio-door rollers and condensation.

03
Churchville

founded in 1815 on the Credit River and designated in 1990, Brampton's only heritage conservation district. Older, heritage-sensitive windows with broken panes and sash wear.

04
Apartments and condos

building-wide glazing systems, seal failure and balcony doors, with condo rules deciding who pays.

05
Heat and sun

in a 25-year field study, 7.9% of sealed units had failed by year 15 and 9.2% by year 25. Across a 1990s subdivision, that adds up, and each failed unit is a glass-only fix where the frame is sound.

DETAIL · 04

Keeping windows dry in a busy household

Water on the room side of the glass is condensation from indoor humidity, not a failed seal. More people, more cooking and more showers push indoor humidity up, and at −18 °C outside, double glazing starts to condense at about 41 to 49% indoor humidity.

01
Aim for the low end of Health Canada's 30 to 50% range in winter

a cheap hygrometer tells you where you are.

02
Run bathroom fans during and after showers

and the range hood while cooking.

03
Open blinds and curtains

so warm room air reaches the glass.

04
If the fog is between the panes

no amount of ventilation will clear it. The seal has failed, the sealed unit needs replacing, and the frame can usually stay.

What to do first when glass breaks

One security vendor's analysis of Peel police mapped data shows Brampton break-and-enters rising about 20% in 2025, from 980 to 1,180 mapped incidents. Those are not official police totals, so treat them as a trend rather than a count.

STEP · 01
Keep children and pets out of the room

and put on closed shoes and heavy gloves before you touch anything.

STEP · 02
Do not pull loose shards from the frame by hand

and do not tape up a cracked tempered patio door and keep using it, because it can let go all at once.

STEP · 03
Photograph everything before cleanup

broad home policies generally cover glass breakage and vandalism in a normally occupied home, but check your own policy.

STEP · 04
Call police for a break-in

before the opening is cleared.

STEP · 05
Get the opening secured

our 24/7 emergency line covers board-up, at emergency glass repair. Ask for an itemized invoice if you are claiming.

FAQ · QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions: Brampton window repair

Do I need a permit to replace window glass in Brampton?

Replacing a sealed unit inside an existing frame does not change the opening, so it is generally treated as repair. Brampton's list of work that does not need a building permit does not mention windows or doors, so we cannot confirm an exemption for whole windows. For enlarging an opening, adding one, or changing a basement bedroom window, check with the City of Brampton Building Division first.

Why are my windows dripping wet every winter in Brampton?

Water on the room side of the glass is condensation from indoor humidity, not a failed seal. Busier households produce more moisture, and NRCan puts a family of four at about 50 litres a week. Keep winter humidity toward the low end of Health Canada's 30 to 50% range, run bath and kitchen fans, and open blinds. If the fog is between the panes, the sealed unit has failed.

My window was smashed in a break-in. What should I do first?

Keep people and pets away, wear shoes and heavy gloves, and do not pull loose shards out of the frame by hand. Photograph the damage before cleanup for your insurer, call police for a break-in, then get the opening secured. We run a 24/7 emergency line with board-up and provide itemized invoices for insurance claims.

Is Bramalea glass work different from newer Brampton homes?

Usually. Bramalea was begun in the late 1950s and built out over the following decades, so windows in homes that age have often been replaced at least once, and the question is whether those later sealed units have failed. Newer subdivisions from the 1990s onward more often still have their original units, now reaching typical failure age.

Is there a heritage rule in Churchville?

Churchville, designated in 1990, is Brampton's only heritage conservation district. We could not confirm Brampton's heritage-permit exemptions for glass repair, so ask the City before changing visible windows, even for like-for-like work.

LOCAL · GUIDE

Local guide

Most fogged or broken windows in Brampton are a glass repair, not a window replacement: the sealed unit is replaced and the sound frame stays, and only a failed frame or a change of size or style calls for a whole new window. What fails depends on the neighbourhood: older or already-replaced windows in Bramalea (begun in the late 1950s), fogged original sealed units in Springdale (from 1991) and later subdivisions, and heavy winter condensation in busy households. Brampton needs about 16% more heating than downtown Toronto by heating degree-days, and more than a quarter of residents live in households of five or more, which adds moisture that shows up on the glass.
01

For a fogged or broken sealed unit in a sound frame, the fix is replacing the glass unit and keeping the frame; full window replacement is only for a failed frame or a change of size or style.
